A+ Certification: An Overview

CompTIA’s A+ certification is meant for entry-level computer technicians. The A+ certification is a vendor-neutral certification that was introduced in 1993 and is now held by over 600,000 people. It has no prerequisites but is widely used as a starting point for various system administration and network administration certifications. For the best free A+ Certification study guide, check out our free A+ 15-Minute Guides. Get your free A+ Study Guide now.

The certification has been renewed and repurposed for 2009; however the 600 series will still be applicable until 2010. Candidates seeking certification in the 600 series A+ exam will require two exams: the 220-601 A+ Essentials and one from the three different elective paths. These paths are the A+ Certified IT, Remote Support, and Depot Technician. In total, there are four exams available, but only two are required for each of the three paths.

Candidates who wish to earn the 2009 version of the A+ certification— the 700 series—must take two exams; the elective paths have been eliminated. Here are the two exams that a candidate must pass to earn the A+ certification

  • CompTIA A+ Essentials (220-701)
  • CompTIA A+ Practical Applications (220-702)

CompTIA A+ Certification: 2006 Edition

For the 2006 edition of the A+ certification, CompTIA offered candidates a choice of specialized A+ certifications. Each of the specialized A+ certifications focused on an area of interest that was relevant to entry-level IT professionals. The format has been abandoned for the 2009 version of the CompTIA A+ certification, but the exams will still be available until 2010.

In order to earn any of the 2006 CompTIA A+ certification categories, a student must pass the CompTIA A+ Essentials (220-601) exam. From there, the candidate has a choice of three elective exams that can be passed to complete the CompTIA A+ certification. The three elective exams are A+ IT Technician (220-602), A+ Remote Support Technician (220-603) or the A+ Depot Technician (220-604). Here’s a breakdown of the requirement to earn each of the three CompTIA A+ certifications.

CompTIA A+ IT Technician Certification

This is the most popular of the A+ series of certifications. In order to obtain the IT Technician Path, you must pass the following exams:

  • CompTIA A+ Essentials (220-601)
  • CompTIA IT Technician (220-602)

CompTIA A+ Remote Support Technician Certification

For entry-level "call center" and "help desk" technicians, CompTIA offered the CompTIA A+ Remote Support Technician certification. In order to obtain the Remote Support Technician Path, you must pass the following exams:

  • CompTIA A+ Essentials (220-601)
  • CompTIA Remote Support Technician (220-603)

CompTIA A+ Depot Technician Certification

To give an individual validation of their hardware/software skills in a depot environment, CompTIA developed the CompTIA A+ Depot Technician certification. In order to obtain the Depot Technician Path, you must pass the following exams:

  • CompTIA A+ Essentials (220-601)
  • CompTIA Depot Technician (220-604)

The exam is meant for entry-level computer professionals, such as desktop support specialists, remote administrators, and depot assemblers. This exam has no prerequisites and is designed for individuals with at least 500 hours in computer technology support. Users that attain the A+ 2009 Certification are usually referred to as a helpdesk technician, computer support professional, or IT technician. The official domains of the exam are:

  • Hardware
  • Troubleshooting, Repair and Maintenance
  • Operating Systems and Software
  • Networking
  • Security
  • Operational Procedure

Successful candidates will understand computer technology fundamentals, as well as networking and security basics. CompTIA A+ Exam (220-701) focuses more heavily on hardware support and troubleshooting than previous iterations of the A+ Essentials exam. Additionally, the previous exam’s focus on soft skills and environmental concerns have been deemphasized and rolled into the single Operational Procedure domain. However, the exam will still ask 100 questions in traditional multiple choice and multiple answer format. The passing score for this exam is a 675 or better on a scale of 900.

A+ Practical Applications (220-702)

The CompTIA A+ (220-702) Practical Application Exam is one of two exams required to achieve the A+ 2009 certification as a PC Support Technician.

  • Hardware
  • Operating Systems
  • Networking
  • Security

Successful candidates will not only understand computer technology fundamentals, but will be able to apply that theory in a practical, working environment. CompTIA A+ Exam (220-702) lends equal weight to the hardware and software support, eliminating soft skills completely for a focus on actually servicing computers and their operating systems. The exam will ask 100 questions in traditional multiple choice and multiple answer format. The passing score for this exam is a 675 or better on a scale of 900.
